Widely recognized as one of Japan’s leading IoT technology providers, SORACOM is breaking down technical barriers to IoT/M2M deployment with a cloud-based connectivity platform that is both technically advanced and affordable. The company uses a unique approach and architecture to provide secure data transfer at lower costs for its global customers and brings this technology to users across all industries in convenient new forms.
SORACOM’s SIM cards are tailored for IoT devices and can be managed through APIs and a web console, that allow convenient activation/deactivation of SIMs, traffic monitoring, network configuration and visualization, storage and management of data, and many more detailed operations in real time.
“SORACOM aims to use its platform to contribute to the overall growth of the IoT industry,” said Ken Tamagawa, Chief Executive Officer of SORACOM. “Current IoT connectivity providers do not really offer secure and swift delivery of services that are affordable and available for everyone in a democratized way. Connecting devices to the internet or the cloud is the easy part. Securing devices and data is the most critical. If it’s on the public internet, it’s hackable. Our customers connect their devices directly to the cloud, using a private network provided by SORACOM instead of public internet.”
Earlier in Feb 2017, SORACOM entered the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) business in Japan with the launch of a “shared service model” that provides gateways to customers as a service.
The company has also built a global ecosystem of over 250 partners through its SORACOM Partner Space (SPS). Through this programme, SORACOM continues to deliver both technical innovation and business value to partners and their customers. SORACOM will now start welcoming new partners from Europe into SPS to further expand the ecosystem.
SORACOM’s SIM cards are available on Amazon’s European sites for small volumes and via user consoles for larger volumes.
SORACOM’s launch event will be held on 27th February at 12.00 (GMT+1) at Fira Montjuïc, 4YFN SORACOM Stage during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
SORACOM was founded in November 2014 by a team of cloud and telecommunication veterans and launched in Japan in September 2015. Copenhagen, Denmark – 1 March 2017 – SORACOM, provider of the leading cloud-native connectivity platform for IoT, and Amsterdam-based MAGNITUDE SPACE, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to seamlessly integrate MAGNITUDE’s low power global area network (LPGAN) with SORACOM’s existing network and core infrastructure. The LPGAN offers global Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity at affordable cost, by combining the benefits of satellite with the characteristics of low power, low data rate terrestrial networks. Benefits are low cost, ease of use and world-wide ubiquitous coverage.
The strategic collaboration between both parties will offer SORACOM’s customers direct access to the LPGAN service via its existing cloud-based IoT platform providing a very convenient ‘one-stop-shop’ for procuring and managing IoT connectivity via GSM, LoraWAN or MAGNITUDE’s LPGAN.
IoT devices often require connectivity in areas where terrestrial networks (e.g. GSM or LoraWAN) do not provide network coverage. This is 90% of the earth’s surface. Traditional satellite networks provide global coverage, but their cost and power requirements are not viable for most mass IoT deployments. MAGNITUDE’s low power global area network solution will solve this global connectivity problem.
“SORACOM and MAGNITUDE SPACE think alike about making IoT connectivity a problem of the past ensuring there is always an IoT connectivity solution available, irrelevant of the application area and anywhere in the world. We believe that connectivity should be made accessible for everybody and be very easy to use.’, said Ernst Peter Hovinga, Chief Executive Officer at MAGNITUDE SPACE.
‘This is an important progressive step for SORACOM in our mission to build a sustainable connected world. SORACOMs core network technology is agnostic to any communications network. After successfully launching networks based on cellular and LoRa technologies, partnership with Magnitude Space will enable our customers worldwide to experience LPGAN technology in a democratised way’, said Parag Mittal, Chief Commercial Officer at SORACOM.
‘MAGNITUDE SPACE is building a network of nano-satellites dedicated to IoT connectivity that is much needed for low data use cases where there is no cellular coverage. We will jointly create a low cost ‘pay as you go’ business model that integrates SORACOM security and data management services for customers globally. The LPGAN will enable enterprises, developers and technology start-ups to build applications and commercialise their concepts in areas where this was previously unthinkable’, said Kenta Yasukawa, PhD, SORACOM CTO and co-founder.

Tokyo, Japan – 15 March 2017 – SORACOM,Inc (Headquarters: Setagaya Ward, Tokyo; President and CEO: Ken Tamagawa), and , Preferred Networks, Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Toru Nishikawa, hereinafter PFN), announce that at the CeBIT 2017 International Information and Communication Technology Trade Fair, to be held in Hanover Germany from 20th to 24th March, we will carry out a joint demonstration using the deep learning technology developed by PFN on IoT equipment connected to Soracom’s network to showcase the concept of “Edge-Heavy Computing.”
The “SORACOM” IoT communications platform delivers secure, scalable over-the-air connectivity purpose-built for IoT, and supports rapid deployment and operation of IoT systems. With the cloud-native “SORACOM” platform, IoT connectivity can be effectively secured from end to end, integrated natively with leading cloud services, and managed directly via Web console or API.
PFN has strengths in machine learning technologies, including IoT and deep learning. PFN develops and provides software platform products that enable data analytics in distributed and collaborative manner to realize advanced intelligence in the fields of manufacturing, transportation, and bio-healthcare.
With wireless technology such as cellular line provided by Soracom, it is becoming easier to send data directly from the IoT devices to the cloud. However, considering bandwidth and data volume, there is still a challenge to continuously transmit large-scale data such as video and audio in real time.
The demonstration of this time is to make it possible to solve these problems by executing deep learning technology and analyze the data directly on the IoT device, transmitting only the truly valuable data to the cloud. PFN calls this technology “edge heavy computing.” By delivering real-time analysis at the edge, it is possible to solve challenges related to privacy and bandwidth, minimizing data volume required for transmission and discarding video data immediately after analysis.
We will demonstrate PFN’s deep learning platform “DIMo (Deep Intelligence in-Motion)” operating on “NVIDIA® Jetson™ TX 1”, a high-performance embedded GPU module. Then, we will analyze the demographics of individuals observed by a camera connected to “NVIDIA Jetson TX 1” on the spot. After that, we will forward only the summarized information to the cloud using “SORACOM Air,” and visualize it using “SORACOM Harvest”.
The merits obtained by transferring only rough information such as age and gender of the person captured by the camera and position information in the image to the cloud are as follows:
Booth number : Hall 12, Stand B 37
* Soracom will also exhibit in Japan Pavillion, Hall 4, Stand A 38, but the above demo exhibition will be Hall 12 only.
